Picnic in the Virgin Islands

Watercolor Painting by J. L. Fleckenstein

This is a watercolor painting of my mother, cooking a picnic on the beach in the Virgin Islands. I worked from a color slide my father shot when he and my mother were living in the Virgin Islands back in the 50’s when they were working there as missionaries. When I first saw the photograph, I loved the sweep of her skirt, the make-shift cooking items (tin cans turned upside down with coals underneath), and the sweet way she has of holding her hand when she stirs.

This painting is 22″ x 15″, watercolor on 140 lb. cold press paper.

If one has to decide upon a favorite, I think this one might be it. I can tell that you painted your mother with such love – just beautiful! And of course, I *heart* the sunflower tiles, too! Congrats on all of your blog and web work these past months!

While I love the oils you did of the fruit, my favorites have to be the watercolour portraits you do. This one of your mother is my absolute favorite. Keep up the great work!
