Barnum’s Glowing Pear Returns

20″ x 26″; Oil on 1/4″ pure eucalyptus hardboard
SOLD

Barnums Glowing Pear by J L Fleckenstein

This is another of the new paintings hanging at Zambistro Restaurant. I have painted this pear before, as a small 6″ x 8″ “postcard” size painting. However, this new one is 20″ x 26″ so was a much different painting experience. I will be creating two more large paintings of pears for the restaurant, and then I will move on the some other subjects.

If you are in the area, definitely stop at Zambistro’s for a scrumptious meal prepared by the exciting and talented young chef/owner, Michael Zambito. Of course my art will be there to please your eye, but mostly I urge you to try the food and the atmosphere because both are superb.

Pears in Moonlight

I was commissioned to create this painting (see below) for Zambistro Restaurant in Medina, New York … our favorite restaurant. Michael Zambito, the talented chef and owner of Zambistro, and I share a love of pears as not only an elegant subject for art, but also as an elegant food.

Michael requested a monochrome painting of pears for a particular spot in his restaurant, and this is the painting I created in answer to his vision. It is nineteen tall by fifty inches wide; oil on 1/4″ pure ecualyptus hardwood.

The walls at Zambistro are a particularly beautiful, deep bronze-gold color and I felt that, even if the painting were to be in monochrome, it should bear a hint of the hue of the walls rather than being strictly black and white. With that in mind, I mixed a paint color that matched the impression of color that comes off of the walls in the restaurant. I then added small amounts of that mixture in with my custom-mixed black, grays, and “whites”.

The result is this dramatic and harmonious painting, “Pears in Moonlight” (so named from a suggestion by my father). (Note: The photo above is the painting when it was still drying, on the mantel above the fireplace at our farm.)

Over the next months I will continue to create paintings that will hang at Zambistro Restaurant. The paintings will be of pears, sunflowers, and possibly other subjects Michael and I agree on. While I was commissioned to painting “Pears in Moonlight” (so named from a suggestion from my father), the other paintings will be available for sale to customers at Zambistro.

Frozen Berries

Frozen Berries an oil painting by J L Fleckenstein

SOLD

Last winter we had an ice storm following several days of snow. As a result, branches, berries, pine cones, etc. became encased in ice which created some very interesting visual effects against the white of the snow. Being new to New York, and having lived in Los Angeles most of my life, seeing these berries wrapped up and isolated in ice was a new experience.

I wanted to see if I could capture the look of the berries in ice, and was very happy with the results. I working this painting wet on wet, with lots of texture. It was enjoyable and exciting to work in this very loose style.

The painting is 6″ x 8″ on 1/4″ pure eucalyptus hardboard, prepped with two coats of acrylic gesso.

Series of family portraits in watercolor

Watercolor portrait from a 1960s era wedding photo by J L FleckensteinWhile I was still living in Los Angeles, a couple commissioned me to create a series of portraits of various family members. First, there was a portrait painted from the grandparent’s wedding photo, which was presented to the grandparents as an anniversary gift.

Then, separate portraits of the couple’s three sons.
These paintings are all watercolors on 140 lb. Arches cold press watercolor paper ranging in size from 20″ x 28″ to 15″ x 18″. All were completed in 2004.

Apricot with Blue Crock

Apricot with Blue Crock an Oil Painting by J L Fleckenstein

SOLD

This is a 10″ x 10″ oil painting on 1/4″ pure eucalyptus hardboard completed in July of 2007 on my farm in Western New York. The apricot was so pretty, and looked very much like a peach. I placed it with the little blue butter crock because the colors were perfect together.

Although the original painting is SOLD, I am offering small reproductions of this and other paintings of mine on tumbled Italian bottocino marble tiles for $12.00. I make the tiles myself using an inkjet transfer technique and the tiles come out very pretty. They are water and heat resistant and make pretty coaster for coffee cups, trivets, or can even be used as actual tiles in a kitchen backsplash, etc.

This is one of the paintings hanging in my “Beginning with Barnum” art show featured at The Winery at Marjim Manor in Appleton, New York from August 18 through September 30, 2007.
